Search Engines
Registering your website with search engines can be a good way of driving 'traffic' to your website. However, with thousands of websites registering with search engines a day, you need to make sure that your website and its contents are optimized so that your website can be found by the right people.
Unfortunately, since the dot.com boom subsided, many search engines have shut down or are looking for revenue streams and are, hence, charging customers to list their websites. Paying to be registered is one way of being listed, and this can be done for Looksmart on your Sensis account after you have purchased any other online Sensis product. Looksmart now powers the "Excite; GoEureka™ ; Optus Net; and AOL search engines.
Some search engines that currently allow you to register your site for no cost are:
The search engines listed above all allow you to submit your site's URL (internet address) to their database of websites. None of them guarantee to accept your site, and some have editors who exercise some discretion. There is usually a link to "submit url" which may be found on the Search Engine's home page, or in the "about us" section. You will typically also find a "submit url" link in the page footer after you have carried out a search.
The following information is a guide to completing the registration process for submitting your URL to a Search Engine.
Brief Description:
This should be highly descriptive and should be no more than 150 characters. It is used to describe and promote the nature of your business and on some search engines may appear as an overview of your website when potential customers carry out a search.
Keywords:
List all the words or combinations of words that you feel a potential visitor would enter into a search engine or directory to find your website. Think carefully about your target market and understand their search patterns.
When preparing your keywords:
- Do not repeat a word more than three times, but try to mention your important keywords three times.
- Do not use more than 874 characters (including spaces). Aim for a maximum of 150 keywords.
- Find out what keywords other websites use. Visit the websites of other companies. Move your mouse so that the cursor sits somewhere in the browser window. Click the right mouse button and select "View Source". Another window will appear which displays the background code that creates the website. At the top of the screen you may find a list of the keywords that the site uses with search engines. These keywords are known as "meta-tags".
- Ask staff members and customers for suggestions as to what they would search for if looking for the products or services your business provides.
- Refine the list, adding and deleting words until you have the best mix.
Choose a Title
The Title is the text that appears in the blue bar on the top of your browser. Some search engines look for the website title and rate it quite highly when evaluating if a website is relevant to a search.
When preparing your title:
- It should have a maximum of 60 characters
- It should include your company name and as many keywords and phrases as you can squeeze in before you reach 60 characters. So, for example, rather than just listing the company name "Daily Travel", have "Daily Travel - Specialising in Corporate and Leisure Travel". This will improve your chances of being listed higher when potential customers search for 'travel', 'leisure' or 'corporate travel' etc
Additional Search Engine Tips:
- Your most important keywords should appear throughout the content of all your pages, and the higher on the page the more likely they are to be found by a Search Engine.
- While graphics and images may add colour to your website, search engines do not read graphics, therefore the more space that images take up, the more of a hindrance they are to a successful search engine listing.
- Linking - many search engines use linking as a criterion for high listings. A linking search evaluates whether or not your URL is listed on any other high quality websites, particularly those websites that have a lot of traffic.
